Does Your Face Shape Really Determine What Haircut You Can Have?
Share
I get this question all the time. A new guest will sit in my chair, phone in hand, and say, "Christine, I have a round face, so the internet says I need long, wispy layers. Is that my only option?"
I love this question. It means you're thinking about what works for you, and that's the perfect place to start.
But let me tell you about Karen. She came to me two years ago with screenshots from Pinterest showing haircuts for "round faces." Every single photo showed the same thing: long layers with side-swept bangs.
"I've been getting this same cut for ten years," she said, looking defeated. "And I hate it. But everyone says it's all I can do with my face shape."
I looked at her hair, which was thick and naturally wavy. I looked at her lifestyle (she mentioned she teaches yoga and hikes every weekend). And I asked her what she actually wanted.
"A chin-length bob," she admitted. "But I've been told that's the worst thing for a round face."
We did the bob. A textured, piece-y bob with tons of movement. When she saw herself, she started crying.
"I look like me," she said. "For the first time in ten years, I actually look like myself."
Here at Urban Texture Hair Studio, we believe your face shape is just the first chapter of the story, not the whole book. Your lifestyle, your hair's natural texture, and frankly, how much time you want to spend styling it every morning are just as important. A great haircut is a collaboration. It's about finding a style that feels like you and fits into your actual life, whether you're heading to a meeting downtown or hiking Nose Hill Park on the weekend.

So What Does Face Shape Actually Tell Us?
What's the deal with face shape? Think of it as a guide to creating balance and harmony. It helps us understand where to build volume, where to create sleek lines, and how to draw attention to your best features. It's never about "fixing" anything. It's about enhancing what you've got.
But here's what face shape doesn't tell us: what you'll love, what fits your personality, or what will make you feel confident.
For Round and Square Faces
If your face has softer, rounder lines, our goal is often to create the illusion of length.
Creating Vertical Lines: We can do this with longer hair, beautiful face-framing layers that draw the eye downward, or even an angled lob that's shorter in the back and longer in the front.
Parting Ways: A deep side part works wonders to break up the symmetry and add a little bit of height and drama. We generally avoid adding a lot of volume right at the cheekbones.
Karen's bob "broke" the traditional rules for round faces. But by adding texture and keeping the ends piece-y rather than blunt, we created movement that gave her face exactly the balance it needed. The rules said no. Her confidence said yes.
For those with a stronger, square jawline, the focus shifts to adding softness and movement.
Texture is Your Friend: We love incorporating wispy layers, soft waves, or textured ends to soften the angles around the jaw. Side-swept styles are fantastic for this.
Movement Matters: Chin-length bobs and longer styles with lots of movement prevent the look from feeling too severe or boxy. A few carefully placed layers can make all the difference.
Finding Harmony for Oval, Heart, and Diamond Shapes
The fun continues with other shapes, each with its own way of shining.
Oval Shapes: Often called the "versatile" shape, oval faces have very balanced proportions. This gives you a ton of options! Our conversation will be less about balancing and more about what you want to highlight. Do you want to show off your cheekbones? Let's try some layers that hit right there.
Heart Shapes: If you have a wider forehead and a narrower chin, we look to create a little more volume around the lower half of your face. Chin-length bobs are a classic choice for a reason. A side part can also help balance proportions beautifully.
I had a client with a heart-shaped face who'd always been told to avoid anything above shoulder length. She came to me wanting a pixie cut. We did it. And she looked absolutely stunning. The short cut actually emphasized her delicate features in a way long hair never had.
Diamond Shapes: With gorgeous, prominent cheekbones, the goal is to show them off! We can do this with textured styles that keep volume away from the cheeks but add a bit of softness around the chin and forehead.
What Actually Matters More Than Face Shape?
This is where the magic really happens. Honestly, you could forget everything you just read about face shapes, and we would still find your perfect cut. Why? Because our consultation process goes so much deeper.
It's no surprise that research shows over 90% of guests trust their stylist's professionalism and knowledge. That relationship is everything. We know that for many of you, a visit to the salon is a vital act of self-care. It's our job to honour that by listening carefully.
Here's what our chat looks like:
It's About Your Life, Not Just Your Hair: Are you running between meetings and dinners at places like The Banquet, or are you a busy parent in Royal Oak who needs a chic but practical style? Do you spend your winters on the hills at Canada Olympic Park? Your daily life dictates what kind of maintenance you can realistically handle.
I had a client who was a emergency room nurse. She needed hair that could go up in a ponytail for 16-hour shifts but still look polished when she wasn't working. Face shape told me one thing. Her life told me something completely different. We went with what fit her life.
The Calgary Climate Factor: We're locals. We get it. Your cut needs to look great after you've pulled a toque off. It needs to withstand that crazy frizz from a surprise Chinook and the static that winter brings. We plan for this, suggesting styles and products that work with our wild weather, not against it.
Your Hair's Personality: We'll look at your hair's texture and density. Is it fine and straight? Thick and curly? We work with your hair's natural tendencies to create a style that's easier for you to manage at home.
Karen had thick, wavy hair that she'd been straightening every single day for ten years because she thought long layers required it. Her bob embraced her natural texture. Now she washes it, scrunches it with some product, and she's done. Five minutes instead of 45.
Creating a Shared Vision: We use photos and talk through ideas to make sure we're on the same page. This conversation ensures you feel confident and excited before we even pick up the scissors.
Most importantly, this consultation is part of every single reservation. It's not an add-on or an upsell. It's simply how we ensure every guest leaves feeling amazing.

What If You Want to Break the "Rules"?
Here's the truth: confidence is the most beautiful thing you can wear.
If you have your heart set on a specific cut that technically "breaks the rules" for your face shape, let's talk about it. Personal style trumps everything. We had a guest from Arbour Lake who was told for years she couldn't have short hair. We worked with her to create a gorgeous textured pixie that brought out her eyes, and she has never felt more like herself.
A haircut that you love and feel powerful in will always look better than a "perfect" cut that doesn't feel like you. Your hair is an expression of your identity. It's meant to be fun and empowering.
I've had clients break every traditional rule in the book:
- Round faces with blunt bobs
- Square jaws with chin-length cuts
- Heart-shaped faces with pixie cuts
- Oval faces with heavy bangs (supposedly their "one weakness")
And you know what? They all looked incredible. Because they felt incredible.
Karen still comes to me every eight weeks for her bob. She's referred six people to me. And she recently told me something that stuck with me.
"I wasted ten years on a haircut I hated because I believed what the internet told me," she said. "Now I have a haircut that makes me happy every single day. I wish I'd done this sooner."
That's what we're after. Not technical perfection according to some face shape chart. But joy. Confidence. Feeling like yourself.
