Highlights & Babylights Calgary | Soft, Dimensional Color from Urban Texture
Looking for highlights or babylights in Calgary that don't look chunky, brassy, or like they were done in 2007? You found us. Urban Texture is a NW Calgary salon with a dedicated blonding team, and highlights and babylights are some of our most-requested services.
The difference between average highlights and great ones comes down to placement, foil technique, the lightener and developer combo, the toner, and how well your stylist understands your face shape and skin tone. We obsess over all of that.
Highlights vs Babylights: What's the Difference?
Both use foils to lift sections of your hair, but they're not the same thing.
- Highlights use thicker sections and create more dramatic dimension. Great if you want noticeable brightness around your face or all over.
- Babylights use ultra-fine, hair-strand-thin sections to mimic the natural micro-highlights kids get from playing outside in the sun. The result is super soft, almost imperceptible up close, but glowy and sun-kissed in photos.
We often combine both in one appointment, layering babylights for softness with traditional highlights for pop. Christine is our blonding and babylight specialist, and she's the stylist most often requested for this exact mix.
If you're torn between this and a hand-painted technique, our balayage page covers the alternative, and our blog post on balayage vs highlights compares the two head-to-head.
Who Highlights and Babylights Are For
Highlights and babylights work for almost every hair type, but they shine especially well on:
- Fine to medium hair that needs visible dimension.
- Anyone who wants more saturation than balayage gives.
- Clients with natural blonde or light brown bases who want to stay bright.
- Brunettes who want subtle warm or cool dimension without going full blonde.
- Gray-blending clients who want to soften regrowth without doing all-over color. (See our gray coverage page for more on that.)
What Happens at Your Highlight Appointment
Walk-in, sit down with your stylist, and we go through the whole consultation. We ask about your hair history, what you've been doing at home, and what you want the end result to look like. Then we set the plan.
- Sectioning. We section the hair into precise zones based on your face shape and where you want brightness.
- Foil placement. We weave or slice each section depending on the look. Babylights are woven super fine. Traditional highlights might be sliced for chunkier dimension.
- Process and check. We watch the lift constantly. We don't rely on a timer alone, ever.
- Tone. Once you're at the right level, we wash you out and apply a custom toner to land your exact shade. Cool, neutral, warm, golden, ash, beige. We mix to fit you.
- Treatment + finish. Most clients add a K18 treatment and finish with a haircut and blowout.
Pricing Structure
Highlights at Urban Texture start at $245+ for partial highlights (around the face and crown), and full head highlights or babylights start at $305+. Final pricing depends on length, density, how much product we use (we weigh it), toner, and add-ons. We always give you a personalized quote at consultation. How to Maintain Highlights in Calgary's Climate
Calgary's hard water, chinook winds, and dry air are tough on highlighted hair. Here's the home routine we recommend:
- Use a purple shampoo once a week max if you want to stay cool-toned. Overuse turns hair gray-purple and dull.
- Sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner from one of our trusted brands.
- Heat protection on every hot tool, every time. More winter hair tips here.
- Weekly bond treatment, especially through winter.
- Toning gloss every 6 to 8 weeks if you tend to go warm or brassy fast.
If you spend weekends at the lake in summer, rinse with bottled water before swimming. Pool chlorine and lake minerals love to turn blonde green or brassy.
Highlights & Babylights FAQs
How long do highlights last in Calgary?
Highlights themselves don't fade out, but the toner does and the regrowth starts showing around 8 to 12 weeks. Most clients refresh every 10 to 14 weeks with a partial highlight or a toner-only appointment.
Are babylights worth it if I have dark hair?
They can be, but you might need traditional highlights for visible dimension. Come in for a consultation and we'll figure out the right mix.
Can I do highlights and balayage together?
Yes, this is actually one of our most-requested services. We'll combine techniques to get exactly the look you want. Read this first if you're new to highlights.
How damaging are highlights?
Done right, highlights aren't hugely damaging. We use professional lightener with bond-builders and pair the service with treatments. Done wrong (think box bleach or untrained foiling), highlights can fry your hair. Read what nobody tells you about going blonde.
What if my highlights turn brassy fast?
Brassiness in Calgary is usually water-related (hard water + chlorine + iron). A clarifying shampoo, a shower filter, and a fresh toner usually solve it. Book a quick toner appointment with us between full visits.
