Tape-In vs. Hand-Tied Extensions: An Honest Comparison from a Calgary Stylist

I get asked about extensions almost daily at our studio. The two methods we install most often are tape-ins and hand-tied wefts, and there is so much misinformation out there about both that I want to break it down honestly. Not as a salesperson, as a stylist who's seen what works, what fails, and what makes a client cry happy tears in the chair.

This is the comparison I wish I'd had access to before I ever got my own first set of extensions. Let's get into it.

What are tape-in extensions?

Tape-ins are exactly what they sound like. Pre-taped wefts of hair, about an inch wide, sandwiched onto your natural hair using a medical-grade adhesive tape. Each "sandwich" holds a thin section of your hair between two tabs of extension hair.

The install is fast. We can usually do a full head in 60 to 90 minutes. The tape is invisible against the scalp once it's pressed in, and the wefts lay flat so you don't get bulk in any one area.

How long do tape-ins last?

The hair itself, if you're using high-quality Remy human hair, lasts 6 to 12 months. The tape needs to be moved up every 6 to 8 weeks as your natural hair grows. We remove, re-tape, and reinstall the same hair until the hair quality is no longer salon-worthy.

What are hand-tied extensions?

Hand-tied wefts are flat strips of hair where each piece has been hand-tied to the weft. They're sewn into a small braid or beaded foundation row across your head. Most heads need 3 to 4 rows for a full install.

The result is silk-flat against your scalp because there's no tape, no glue, no hardware. The wefts are flexible and comfortable. When done well, you genuinely cannot feel them.

How long do hand-tied extensions last?

The hair itself lasts 9 to 12 months with good care. Move-ups happen every 7 to 10 weeks. The install takes 3 to 5 hours the first time and about 2 hours for each move-up.

The honest cost comparison

This is where most clients lock up. Tape-ins are typically less expensive at the install because the labor is faster and the hair quantity is often a little lower. Hand-tied wefts are more expensive upfront because the wefts themselves cost more and the install is longer.

Over a year, the math gets closer than people think because both methods need maintenance. We broke down real Calgary extension costs in this post if you want the full numbers.

Comfort, fit, and feel

Tape-ins lay flatter at the scalp than hand-tieds for some hair types, but bulkier for others. If you have very fine, slippery hair, the tape sometimes feels heavier than expected because the adhesive needs the weight of your hair to grip.

Hand-tieds, when sewn correctly, are honestly the most comfortable extensions I install. There's no glue, no plastic, just a flexible weft. Most of my hand-tied clients forget the extensions are even there after the first week.

Sleeping and showering

Both methods are wash-safe and sleep-safe with proper care. Tape-ins need a sulfate-free, oil-free shampoo near the scalp because oils break down adhesive. Hand-tieds don't have that restriction, so you have a bit more freedom with product.

Which one is better for Calgary's climate?

Calgary's hard water and dry air are tough on extension hair. Both methods do well here, but I lean slightly toward hand-tieds for clients who swim, hot yoga regularly, or wash their hair daily. The lack of adhesive means there's nothing for minerals to break down.

That said, tape-ins are a great choice for clients new to extensions because the install is shorter and the commitment is lower. Our extensions service page walks through the consultation process so we can match you to the right method.

Real client stories

Brittany came to us last year. Long, fine, blonde hair, but it was struggling to grow past her shoulders. We started her on tape-ins because she'd never had extensions before and wanted to dip her toe. She loved them so much that on her third move-up, she switched to hand-tieds. She's been on hand-tied wefts for nine months and her natural hair is now at her bra strap.

Erin had thicker, coarser hair to start. We knew tape-ins would feel heavy on her, so we installed three rows of hand-tieds for length and volume. She's an avid runner and has zero issues with sweat or shedding. She comes in every 8 weeks for move-ups.

Megan is a special case. She has very fine hair and is sensitive to anything pulling on her scalp. We did a small test run with tape-ins, but they felt heavy. We moved her to a half-head of hand-tied wefts, and she's been comfortable ever since. The lesson? Every head is different, and consultations matter.

Which method is right for me?

Choose tape-ins if: You're new to extensions and want a lower commitment. Your hair is medium thickness. You want a shorter install. You wash your hair every other day or less.

Choose hand-tied wefts if: You want maximum comfort. Your hair is fine and you're sensitive to any tugging. You wash daily or sweat heavily. You want a longer-term, lower-maintenance method.

If you're still not sure, this post is a longer read on choosing the right method for your lifestyle in Calgary.

What to expect at your first install

The consultation is where the magic happens. We look at your hair density, fall, color match, and lifestyle. We weigh hair so you only buy what you actually need, the same philosophy we use with our color services.

Your first install will run anywhere from 90 minutes (tape-ins) to 5 hours (hand-tieds with custom color match). We always pair the install with a treatment so your natural hair is at its best when the wefts go in.

Care between appointments

Brushing

Use a loop brush or soft-bristle brush. Always start at the ends and work up. Hold the section above the install row to avoid pulling on the foundation.

Washing

Sulfate-free shampoo. No conditioner near the install row. Air dry or low heat. Sleep with hair in a loose braid or low ponytail to avoid tangling.

Heat styling

Always use heat protectant. Keep direct heat away from the install rows. The extension hair is more vulnerable than your natural hair because it's not getting natural scalp oils.

What if my hair is damaged already?

We don't install extensions on hair that isn't healthy enough to hold them. Period. If you come in and we see breakage, weak ends, or scalp issues, we'll recommend K18 treatments first or a series of head spa appointments before we even talk about install. Healthy hair holds extensions. Unhealthy hair sheds them and gets damaged in the process.

Stylist match matters

Not every stylist installs extensions, and the ones who do have specialties. We'll match you to the right pair of hands during your consultation. Meet the team here, but really, leave the matching to us. We know who's best for your hair.
