Which Hair Extension Method Will Actually Work for Your Life in Calgary?
Share
One of the most common questions we hear from new guests at Urban Texture is, "I think I want extensions, but I have no idea where to even start." And honestly, that makes perfect sense. With so many different methods out there, it's easy to feel a little lost.
You see a picture you love, but you don't know if that method will work for your hair type, your lifestyle, or your budget.
Last month, I had a client named Sarah come in for an extension consultation. She'd been researching for three months, reading every blog post she could find, watching YouTube videos, asking friends. She was more confused than when she started.
"Everyone says their method is the best," she told me, frustrated. "But no one is telling me which one is actually right for me."
I looked at her hair. Fine texture, medium density, natural blonde. She worked downtown as a lawyer with early morning court appearances. She worked out four days a week. She wanted length but couldn't spend an hour styling every morning.
"Sarah," I said, "you don't need the 'best' method. You need the method that works for your specific hair and your specific life."
That's what this guide is for. Carrington and I wanted to sit down and just talk you through it, stylist to friend. We've specialized in extensions for years and believe the best method is the one that fits seamlessly into your life, not the one we happen to be pushing that week. We work with everything, so we can give you the real story on what's best for you right here in Calgary.

What Are Beaded Weft Extensions Actually Like?
This is a true workhorse method and a favourite for many of our guests with medium to thick hair.
We take a collection of hair, called a weft, and attach it to your natural hair using tiny silicone-lined beads. There's no glue, tape, or heat involved, which is a huge plus for hair health.
They're best for medium to thick hair density. They provide amazing volume and length and are incredibly durable, making them perfect for the active Calgary lifestyle. If you're someone who loves hiking Nose Hill Park on the weekend or heading to a class at Goodlife Fitness Creekside, these will keep up with you.
The commitment is that you'll visit us every 6 to 8 weeks to have the wefts moved up. The hair itself is reusable and can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months with great care. The investment for initial installation usually falls between $800 and $1500, depending on the length and volume you want.
The biggest win here is the volume you get. The wefts create a beautiful, full curtain of hair that looks incredibly natural.
I have a client named Michelle who's a yoga instructor. She's incredibly active, teaching five classes a week, and her hair is in a ponytail or bun constantly.
"Will extensions survive my lifestyle?" she asked, skeptical.
We did beaded wefts. A year later, she's still wearing them. She gets them moved up every 8 weeks and the hair is still in perfect condition.
"I thought I'd have to baby them," she told me. "But they're tougher than my natural hair."
How Are Genius Wefts Different?
This is a newer, more innovative take on the weft. A genius weft is super thin and flexible, designed to lay completely flat against your scalp. It's a fantastic solution for guests who found traditional wefts a little too bulky.
Because they're so seamless, genius wefts are a great option if you have finer hair but still want the impact of a weft. They blend beautifully and are incredibly comfortable to wear. We're seeing more and more guests from communities like Royal Oak and Tuscany choose this for a lightweight, luxurious feel.
Sarah, the lawyer I mentioned earlier, ended up choosing genius wefts. Her fine hair couldn't support the weight of traditional wefts, but she wanted that full weft look.
After installation, she ran her hand through her hair, surprised. "I can't feel them at all," she said. "Are they actually in there?"
That's exactly what genius wefts are supposed to do.
Six months later, Sarah's still thrilled. She can throw her hair up in a professional bun for court and no one can see the wefts. She can wear it down and it looks naturally thick and healthy.
What About Nano Ring Extensions?
If you're looking for ultimate customization, nanos are your answer. This is an individual strand method, meaning we attach tiny individual extensions to small sections of your own hair using a ring that's about 90% smaller than a traditional micro-bead.
They're best for all hair types, but especially great for adding subtle, targeted volume or length. We have many professionals who work downtown and love nanos because they offer a natural enhancement without being overly dramatic. They offer incredible movement and are virtually undetectable.
The installation is more detailed, so it takes longer. Maintenance is typically every 8 to 10 weeks. One heads up: this method requires a bit more care at home to prevent tangling at the root, but the results are stunning.
I had a client named Jennifer who only wanted volume at her crown. The rest of her hair was long and thick, but the top looked flat.
"I don't need length," she explained. "I just need this area to match the rest."
Nano rings were perfect for targeted placement. We added just 50 strands at her crown. The transformation was subtle but dramatic. Her hair looked naturally full everywhere.
"This is exactly what I needed," she said. "No one can tell I have extensions, but everyone asks if I did something different."

Are Sew-In Wefts Still a Good Option?
This is the classic, time-tested method. We create a small, supportive braid, or track, with your natural hair and then sew the weft directly onto it. It's one of the most secure attachment methods available.
Sew-ins are fantastic for thicker or more textured hair types that can comfortably support the track. It's an incredibly reliable choice for anyone with a very active lifestyle because you never have to worry about slippage. The maintenance appointments are also a bit further apart than some other methods.
I have a client named Tanya with naturally textured hair. She'd tried tape-ins at another salon and they slipped out within two weeks.
"I thought extensions just didn't work for my hair type," she said.
We did sew-ins. They've been rock-solid for eight months. She swims, works out, and they haven't budged.
"Why didn't someone tell me about this method before?" she asked. "I wasted so much money on tape-ins that didn't work."
Because not every salon works with every method. That's the problem.
What's the Deal With Tape-In Extensions?
Tape-ins are known for being the fastest extension application. We sandwich a small section of your natural hair between two adhesive-taped wefts. The installation can often be done in under two hours.
They're best for most hair types, and ideal for someone who wants to try extensions without a long-term commitment. The commitment is that this method requires the most frequent maintenance, with move-ups needed every 4 to 6 weeks.
Here's a Calgary climate note: our dry air can be tricky for adhesives. It's critical to use the right professional products at home. Using the wrong shampoo or conditioner can cause the tapes to slip. We always guide our guests on the perfect home care routine to keep them secure.
I had a client who'd gotten tape-ins elsewhere and they slipped out after three weeks. She came to me frustrated and ready to give up on extensions entirely.
"They told me tape-ins were low maintenance," she said. "But they fell out and I have to go back every month? That's not low maintenance."
I explained that tape-ins are lower commitment, not lower maintenance. There's a big difference. For her lifestyle, beaded wefts made more sense.
Sometimes the "easiest" method isn't actually the easiest once you factor in your real life.
What's Actually the Most Important Factor?
Here's the thing: you can read a dozen blog posts, but nothing replaces a one-on-one conversation. At Urban Texture, we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all solution. Carrington and I are certified in every single one of these methods, which is a unique advantage.
Why does that matter?
It means we have no reason to push you toward one specific technique. Our only goal is to listen to your hair goals, look at your hair's density and health, and understand your daily routine. From there, we can create a completely customized plan. Sometimes, we even combine methods on one guest to achieve the perfect result.
We've seen guests come in after having a bad experience at a salon that only offered one method, and it simply wasn't the right fit for their hair. A proper consultation prevents that. It's also where we can give you a transparent quote so you know exactly what to expect.
Sarah, the lawyer, told me something during her six-month follow-up that really stuck with me.
"I almost went to a salon that only did tape-ins because they were $200 cheaper," she said. "But they would have been completely wrong for my hair and my life. I would have wasted that money and still not had what I wanted."
She's right. The cheapest method isn't the best method if it doesn't actually work for you.
Your Top Extension Questions, Answered
Will extensions damage my hair?
When installed, maintained, and removed by an experienced professional, extensions should not cause damage. The problems arise from poor application, leaving them in too long, or trying to remove them yourself. We also highly recommend adding a K18 treatment to your maintenance reservations to keep your natural hair strong.
How much should I really budget?
It's an investment, for sure. The initial cost covers the high-quality hair and the hours of detailed work for installation. Think of it like any luxury service. After the initial investment, you only have to budget for the maintenance appointments, which are much less.
Can I still wear my hair in a ponytail?
Absolutely! Strategic placement is key. We always ask how you like to wear your hair so we can place the extensions in a way that allows you to wear it up without them being visible.
