The Brunette Balayage Trend Taking Over Calgary This Season

Blonde used to be the only balayage clients asked for. That has shifted hard in the last couple of years, and right now in Calgary, brunette balayage is having a full-on moment. Almost every consultation I've done in the last six weeks has involved some version of "I don't want to be platinum, I want soft warmth and dimension on my brunette."

This trend is here to stay, and I want to walk you through what it actually looks like, the variations we're booking most, and how to figure out which version of brunette balayage suits your hair, your skin tone, and Calgary's climate.

What is brunette balayage exactly?

Brunette balayage is the same hand-painted technique as classic balayage, but the lift is intentionally minimal. Instead of going several levels lighter, we lift maybe one to two levels and place warmth and dimension exactly where it flatters your face. The result is a brunette that looks expensive, sun-touched, and dimensional, not flat.

It's the difference between a brunette that looks like a single block of color and a brunette that looks like you've spent the last six months in the Mediterranean.

Why is it trending right now?

A few reasons. First, blonde maintenance is exhausting and expensive. Many of our clients have been blonde for years and are ready for something lower-maintenance without going fully natural. Brunette balayage gives them the polish without the upkeep.

Second, social media has shifted. The "expensive brunette" aesthetic is everywhere. Think Hailey Bieber, think coffee tones, think soft caramel face-framing pieces.

Third, Calgary's climate is unforgiving on bleached hair. Brunette balayage allows clients to keep dimension without the brittleness that comes with going aggressively blonde. Our Calgary winter balayage post covers how climate affects color choices.

The variations we book most

Caramel brunette balayage

Soft caramel ribbons through a brunette base. Warmth without going copper. This works on warm skin tones and looks beautiful on medium to dark brunettes.

Espresso balayage with face frame

A deeper brunette with subtle dimension and a brighter money piece around the face. Ashley is known around the studio for these face-framing money pieces, and she pairs them perfectly with a low-key balayage.

Bronde balayage

The blend between brunette and blonde. Lighter than a true brunette, deeper than a true blonde. This works on clients who used to be fully blonde and are transitioning down.

Cool brunette balayage

Smoke and ash tones, no warmth. This is for clients who don't want any red or copper coming through. We tend to use a careful glaze to keep the cool tones holding through Calgary's winter.

Money piece only

If you're not ready to commit to a full balayage, a money piece around the face is a great entry point. Our highlights and babylights service covers this.

Real client transformations

Erin had been platinum blonde for four years. Her hair was tired and her schedule didn't allow for monthly toners anymore. We took her down to a soft caramel brunette balayage over two appointments. She told me she gets more compliments now than she did as a blonde. Her hair is healthier and her appointments are now four months apart.

Megan was a natural brunette who had never colored her hair. She wanted something subtle. We did a soft caramel face frame and a few balayage pieces through the mid-lengths. The result is so natural that her mom didn't notice until Megan pointed it out, but she gets stopped at coffee shops.

Brittany was a darker brunette with absolutely no dimension. We did an espresso balayage with a brighter face frame, and the change in her overall look was dramatic without anyone being able to point to one specific thing. She just looks more polished.

How long does brunette balayage last?

Longer than blonde balayage, generally. Because the lift is gentler and the contrast with your roots is softer, brunette balayage grows out very gracefully. Most clients stretch appointments to 5 to 6 months. This post on color maintenance has tips that apply.

Calgary climate considerations

Hard water in Calgary pulls warmth into brunette balayage faster than expected. If you have cool tones, you'll want a gloss every 8 to 10 weeks to keep them. Warm tones hold longer but can fade to brassy. We always include a gloss with the balayage service.

Chinook winds dry the cuticle of color-treated hair. We pair every balayage with a K18 treatment to keep the bond integrity strong, especially through winter.

How to ask for it at your appointment

Bring photos. Multiple photos. Show us:

  • Your overall depth (how dark vs light)
  • The warmth or coolness you want
  • How visible you want the dimension to be
  • Where you want the brightness placed

Different stylists will have different specialties. Christine is our blonding expert and brings that precision to brunette balayage too. Payton's root smudge work makes the grow-out particularly clean. This post on photo references walks through how to communicate the look you want.

Cost expectations

A full brunette balayage is similar in price to a blonde balayage at our studio. The technique takes the same time, and we use the same quality of products. We weigh our color, which we wrote about here.

Pairing brunette balayage with a haircut

This is where the look really comes alive. Long layers with a textured ends placement showcase brunette balayage beautifully. Our haircut service is built around layering that flatters the dimension we paint in. This post on Calgary haircuts covers what works in our climate.

Brunette balayage with extensions

If you have extensions or are considering them, we'll color-match the wefts to your new dimension. Our extensions service handles this.

Is this a forever look?

It's a low-commitment look. If you want to add brightness later, we can. If you want to go darker, easy. Brunette balayage is one of the most flexible color services there is.
