Wedding Hair Timeline: Bridal Prep from 12 Months Out to the Big Day

You're engaged. Congratulations. Now you're staring at Pinterest boards full of wedding hair inspiration and wondering when to start thinking about your hair so it actually looks like that on your wedding day. Most brides come to us six to eight weeks before the wedding panicking. We can absolutely work with that, but the brides who show up at twelve months out have hair that looks effortlessly perfect on the big day, because it actually was effortless once we did the work in advance.

Here is the timeline I walk every bride through at our studio at 12024 Sarcee Trail NW. Print it, screenshot it, send it to your bridesmaids. Let's get into it.

12 months out: The foundation

This is the time to start thinking strategically about your hair. We're not styling anything yet, we're building the canvas. At 12 months out, book a consultation. We'll ask:

  • What's your wedding date and venue?
  • Indoor or outdoor? Daytime or evening?
  • What's your style inspiration?
  • What's your hair history? Color, treatments, damage?
  • Are extensions in the plan?

From here we'll set a service schedule. Our bridal service page walks through the offerings.

What if I want to grow my hair out?

12 months gives you about 6 inches of growth if your hair is healthy. We'll put you on a treatment plan to support growth and prevent breakage at the ends. This post on long hair in Calgary covers the basics.

9 to 12 months out: Color decisions

This is when we lock in your color trajectory. If you want to be blonder for the wedding, we start lifting carefully. If you want to be richer or more brunette, we plan a transition. The goal is to land at your wedding-day color in month 11 or 12, then maintain it cleanly through the final month.

Don't make drastic changes in the last three months. Give your hair time to settle.

6 to 9 months out: Treatment ramp-up

At this point we start regular hair treatments. K18 every 4 to 6 weeks. Head spa every 6 to 8 weeks. Glosses to keep tone fresh between full color appointments.

If you're considering extensions, this is when to test them. Our extensions service includes a consultation to figure out the right method. Tape-ins are quicker for first-timers. Hand-tied wefts are more comfortable. This post compares the two.

3 to 6 months out: Trial run season

Book your trial. The trial is a 90-minute appointment where we test your wedding-day hairstyle on your actual hair, with your veil if you have it. Bring photos, bring your headpiece, bring your dress photo. We'll style multiple looks if you're unsure.

This is also when we'll trim ends gently to keep them healthy without sacrificing length. We're not chopping. Just maintaining.

What if I'm not happy with the trial?

This is what trials are for. We'll book a second one if needed. Better to figure it out now than on wedding day.

2 to 3 months out: Final color and treatment plan

Lock in your last big color appointment for around 4 to 6 weeks before the wedding. Color settles in over a few weeks, and you don't want to be mid-cycle on the day. Layer in a treatment 2 weeks before the wedding for shine.

If you have extensions, the last full install or move-up should be 2 to 3 weeks before. Enough time to settle in, not so long that they need adjustment.

1 month out: Maintenance mode

Now we're in protect mode. No new chemical services. No drastic cuts. Continue treatments and home care. Drink water. Sleep. Wear silk if you have it.

What about a final gloss?

A gloss 7 to 10 days before the wedding is the secret weapon. It refreshes tone and adds shine without changing your color.

1 week out: Final prep

Book a final blowout the day before, or do your wedding-day style on freshly washed but day-2 hair (most styles hold better). Avoid heavy oils that will weigh hair down.

Wedding day

Eat breakfast. Hydrate. We allow about 60 to 90 minutes for bridal hair, depending on the complexity. Bring your veil, your headpiece, anything you're wearing in your hair. Bring backup hairpins. Bring your dress photo for reference.

We send you home with a kit, hairspray, bobby pins, an emergency comb, in case you need touch-ups later.

Real bride stories

Rachel came to us 14 months out. She wanted to grow her hair from shoulder-length to mid-back, go from a warm brunette to a cool brunette, and have hand-tied extensions installed for the day. We hit every milestone. Her wedding photos are stunning and her hair was healthier on her wedding day than it had been in years.

Jennifer came to us 8 weeks out, panicked. We weren't going to grow inches in 8 weeks, but we did install tape-in extensions, ran a series of K18 treatments, and put her on a strict no-heat plan with a deep conditioning routine. Her hair photographed beautifully.

Sarah wanted simple. No extensions, no major color change, just a polished version of herself. We did 3 trials over 4 months to find the right style, did a final gloss the week before, and styled her in 45 minutes on the day. She told me her wedding hair looked exactly like her, only better.

Bridal party prep

Don't forget your bridesmaids and your mother. We can book them in a block on the morning of, or do trials with them too. Our services page has all the bridal party options.

What about the groom?

Groom appointments matter too. Our men's haircut service is built for guys who want to look polished without overdoing it. Book a haircut 7 to 10 days before so it has time to settle.

Calgary climate notes for brides

Outdoor weddings in Calgary mean wind. Always. We'll incorporate styling techniques that hold up in chinook conditions. This post on Calgary weather and hair has tips.

Winter weddings face dry indoor air. Plan extra moisture treatments leading up.
